tour itinerary
The Isle of Skye is quickly becoming our second home with more and more people booking an Isle of Skye tour with us to show them the hidden treasures of the misty isle. It’s easy to see why once you discover the places we visit…
Shortly after leaving Inverness you are greeted by views of Loch Ness and it would be rude not to stop by for a quick photo opp and for those brave enough you can even dip a toe in or if you're really brave go for a swim (we actually had 3 young men do this in 2017 so we always have a towel just in case).
The journey then winds its way along the Loch and through Drumnadrochit before arriving at Urquhart Castle for a quick photo stop of these historic castle ruins on the shores of Loch Ness. We'd love to stay for longer but you have a big day ahead and lots more amazing sights to see!!
The journey through Glen Shiel always takes our breath away and turns our thoughts back to 1719 and the Battle of Glenshiel during the Jacobite rising between British Government troops and an alliance of Jacobite and Spanish.
The journey then moves on to the Five Sisters of Kintail which is one of our favourite views in Scotland. It is a classic ridgewalk taking in three Munros but unfortunately there won't be time to navigate it on your tour as one of Scotland's most famous castles is next on the itinerary.
The magnificent Eilean Donan Castle is recognised as one of the most iconic images of Scotland all over the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish Highlands. It's also been used in a nunber of films including one of our favourite films of all time - Highlander, "There Can Only Be One!".
The Isle of Skye is connected to the mainland by a beautifully designed and constructed road bridge joining the mainland village of Kyle of Lochalsh to the village of Kyleakin on Skye.
Once you're on the Isle of Skye your imagination can run wild, there is a feast for all of your senses rolling through villages and crofts on this little island which attracts visitors from all over the world. It's actually not that little and you could easily spend a week here and not even scratch the surface but we think our stops are the highlights you can fit in to a one day tour of Skye.
Sligachan is your first stop, a small settlement on Skye close to the Cuillin mountains which provides a good viewpoint for seeing the Black Cuillin mountains. We also love the Sligachan Bridge and the magical waters which flow in the river running below - make a wish it might just come true.
Next up is Portree the largest town on Skye featuring lots of nice wee shops and places to grab a coffee or sit down while enjoying a bite to eat. It is said the town's name dates back to 1540 when King James V visited with a fleet of war ships during his great expedition to the western isles.
Leaving Portree behind the land opens up and if you're lucky you'll catch a glimpse of Old Man of Storr which isn't really a man at all. The ‘Old Man’ is actually a large pinnacle of rock that stands high and can be seen for miles around . Often shrouded in mist the Old Man of Storr is a sight to behold and a great memory to take home.
One of the Isle of Skye's hidden gems is Lealt Gorge and Waterfall where we love to have a little wander and discover one of the Isle of Skye's natural wonders. The area also has an interesting history featuring a steam locomotive and dynamite - we'll tell you more about it on your tour!!
Kilt Rock is another geological wonder with vertical basalt columns creating the pleats and intruded sills of dolerite carving out the kilt’s pattern. If you're not a big geology fan it's still a must see on any Isle of Skye tour and the views out over the sound of Raasay are truly majestic!!
The Quiraing is an alien landscape that takes you to another world and is very popular with walkers and hikers. The views are some of the best on the Isle of Skye and if you're looking for an adventure, this is where to come!! It's good for all abilities - even if it's just a little wander to see the views and take in the sheer awesomeness of this corner of Skye. Those looking for a challenge will adventure deeper in to the Quiraing and the deeper you go the bigger the reward!
The magic of the Faerie Glen is not to be missed on a trip to the Isle of Skye. Hidden away in the hills, it could easily be missed on an Isle of Skye tour, but not when you're with Invergordon Tours!! Share the quaich, have a wander, or climb to the top of the highest peak and claim your title as the Faerie King/Queen. Whatever you choose to do here you'll absolutely love it. We certainly do!!
The Stromeferry Viewpoint looks out over Lochcarron and is the perfect place to reflect on your day, take a few photos and maybe even enjoy a wee dram of whisky to toast tour day on the Isle of Skye.
Time permitting we like to drop in to Rogie Falls on the way back which are impressive waterfalls on a suspension bridge across the beautiful Black Water river. It's only a short walk from the car park and during August and September there's an excellent chance of seeing wild salmon leaping upstream.
Tour length: 10-12hrs
